There are few things are more relaxing to me than being close to the water, bobbing along in a sturdy craft or cruising along the coast, soaking up sunshine and beautiful views.
One of my favorite places to do that isΒ Malta.
While inland Malta can be dry as a bone, dusty and rocky, the coast is stunningly beautiful, lined with harbors dotted with innumerable yachts and brightly-colored fishing boats.
I love the contrast of pristine vessels against old limestone buildings.
Somehow even the working vessels look nice in this setting with their brilliant colors reflecting on the glistening water.
My favorite ones of all are the traditional Maltese wooden boats. Their curvy lines and cheerful paint colors make me happy.
Do you like being on the water? If so, what is your favorite place to take a boat ride?
Fabulous photos Krista. Being on the water in a small vessel is not my favourite thing. I certainly love being near the water, and I think that I need to see Malta at some stage π
I will admit I only like being on the water within sight of land, @wanderingsheila:disqus Anything else scares me silly. π
Even if I love being on the water I rarely get the opportunity. I am looking forward this fall to being on the ocean in a fishing vessel.
SO excited for you, Val!! Can’t wait to see pictures of your adventures. π
Looks like fun. How friendly are the people in Malta?
It was very fun, @UlyssesSRant:disqus especially since I got to drive the boat part of the time. π They are VERY friendly – so warm and welcoming and hospitable. I really loved the ones I met and am still friends with several of them. π
I’m glad to hear it. I’m really looking forward to visiting Malta someday…especially the site of the great siege…
Yes!! I really want to go back and linger in the historical sites instead of just whizzing through. I’ve been reading so much about Malta since then, and I NEED to go back. π
I feel the same way, and in fact just said so in my latest blog post–except I was in L.A., not Malta. Beautiful pictures as usual!
Oh, I bet LA was beautiful too, @BessV:disqus π I look forward to reading about your trip. π
It’s very beautiful – should put it on my list!
Yes, you should, Andrea! π I think you would really enjoy it. π
Just the sight of all those boats would make me happy! They are so cheerful with their bright colors!
I agree completely, Joanne. π They are the loveliest little boats. π
Being on the water is soo relaxing, I love to take boat rides as well… Can’t wait to visit Malta one day!
Relaxing is the word for it, Tuula, for body and spirit. I love it. π
I love getting our and seeing a city from the water. Malta looks the perfect place to do this…one day!!
I do too, @jenny_atasteoftravel:disqus It’s my favorite way to see a new place. π
Malta seems to have intense blue everywhere you look, beautiful.
It sure does, Linda. Even inland, where it’s dry as a bone, the sky is stunning. π
You asked about boat rides. Well, I usually like strolling, still water rides. Ones that, if needed, I could get out and swim to shore. Better yet, shallow enough to walk to shore. After 2 terrible white water kayaking accidents and my mother trying to drown me while rinsing out my hair as a child (or it seemed), I admire your photos from afar. The rocking of large ships make me sick for days. And, I am so nervous, I can’t stop having to run to the bathroom to pee. However, since that is the case for me, I absolutely love exploring the water through your photos. I love the blue. It is so rich! What kind of camera do you shoot with?
Love you dearly and your exploring the water for me.
My dearest Kelley, I will happily adventure over the water for you, and YOU can adventure to scary, high places for me. π Then we’ll both enjoy each other’s pictures and not have to scare ourselves silly. π Love you heaps XOXO
You have given me a much needed reprieve today! Krista, what lens, setting – etc – do you use when taking most of your gorgeous landscape photos. I have a 50mm 1.4 for my food photography – and am slowly learning. My friends gave me a gift certificate at the camera store as I don’t have a lens for scenery. Suggestions?

Dear Valerie, I wish I could help you but I only use a little point and shoot automatic camera, and know nothing at all about lenses or settings. How lovely of your friend to give you the gift certificate!! I hope you find a knowledgeable soul who can guide you to the perfect lens for you. π xo
